The Story of Camp Sounds
-George Jenkins
“You know, it sounds fucking great in here.” Marty Taters and I were playing a benefit show at the Camp Pollock Lodge, near downtown Sacramento. The show was outdoors, but the building was open so artists could store their stuff inside. While tuning up for our set, it became obvious that this was a great sounding room.
Camp Pollock was built by the Boy Scouts in the 1930’s. The lodge is wood on all sides, floor and ceiling. It’s big, and it sounds amazing in there when you play the loud rock and roll music. The GIANT fireplace at one end of the building, an overly confident flock of peacocks roaming the grounds, and the last few turns of the American River right off the back patio, make Camp Pollock a great, off-the-beaten-path place to hang out on a beautiful spring day.
Fast forward a year or so, armed with some snare drums (much to the annoyance of some wedding planners who were also visiting that day), we made a follow-up trip to the Lodge. The room really responded to the heavy percussion, right up to the time they politely asked us to go away.
And so, Camp Sounds was born. Marty would line up the bands and I would handle the production. We would collect some great songs, performed in this really cool place, and then put out an album to benefit local charities.
Each one of our troop meetings lasted a day with a few vocal overdubs done later at my studio. There were the typical hassles with insurance, permits, etc., and moving an entire studio worth of equipment to Camp Pollock and setting it up, was no small feat.
But, we ended up with a great collection of true downtown artists; some of the old guard of the Sacramento scene as well some young blood. Six stories from a variety of genres but all with that rootsy tone, courtesy of Camp Pollock.
Autumn Sky Hall
The first single from Camp Sounds, I Woke Up, by Autumn Sky Hall, is out now on all the platforms. Originally from Paradise, Calif., Autumn has been performing in Sacramento since 2006. Among other accolades, she has been awarded the SAMMIE for Artist of the Year (three years in a row) and inducted into the SAMMIE Hall of Fame. She has opened for one of her idols, Heart, and performed at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Music Festival.
The song speaks to the anxiety of lopsided love and overwhelming, all consuming, infatuation. Autumn was channeling the aforementioned Heart as well as Fleetwood Mac, and Linda Ronstadt, when she wrote I Woke Up — trying to find that moody, minor key vibe, that darker vein.
Backed up by local hero, Lare Crawley on Bass, Drummer Graham Carter and Mason Hoffman on Guitars, the session was a real collaborative affair. The scouts quickly took the song from an acoustic guitar demo to a full-blown rock song. Mason’s 12 string electric guitar gives it a bit of that psychedelic western feel that Autumn calls home. Rock and Roll merit badges for everyone!
Coming Up Soon
Autumn is not the only talented artist on Camp Sounds. Look for the album release in September, that features great new music from Band of Coyotes, Brotherly Mud, Drop Dead Red, Lady Lively, and Shotgun Slim.
